Support Restaurant Workers

I think more restaurants should offer more mental health help options and should give chefs more time off when possible.

A lot of chefs are or have dealt with some form of depression or other mental issues. According to research conducted by Unilever Food Solutions, the global supplier to the food and beverage industry that has taken an active interest in mental health in the industry, 74 percent of chefs are sleep deprived to the point of exhaustion, 63 percent of chefs feel depressed, and more than half feel pushed to the breaking point. Chefs are overworked and it’s hard for them to see their families. For most chefs the reality has always been much less romantic. Long, unsociable hours are often poorly rewarded, and a sometimes brutal workload makes being a chef one of the most stressful ways to earn a living. Burnout is commonplace, and a healthy work-life balance is difficult to maintain. One 2019 survey found that eight out of 10 employees in professional kitchens had experienced mental health problems during their career. Workers need more health benefits. “Offering popular benefits to your restaurant employees, such as group health insurance coverage, may be an effective way to reduce turnover and increase loyalty and retention.” (Himber) Workers may be more likely to stay at a restaurant if they are aware that their employer has given them ways to help themselves and their families. providing health insurance may include less off days and less sick days due to workers having better access to medical help and resources and being able to properly take care of themselves.

In conclusion, I believe restaurant owners should give out more health benefits and should do paid time off as well as giving mental health help to those who need it.
